Princeton University
Applicants receive aid based on their families’ financial need. We do not use income cutoffs when determining whether to award aid. Our financial aid counselors carefully review each family's individual circumstances using the information provided on the Princeton Financial Aid Application. Any student whose family feels unable to afford the full cost of attendance is encouraged to apply for aid.
In general, here is what you can expect:
Lower-income families (yearly income less than $53,500)
Financial aid packages typically cover the majority of educational costs through a combination of grants and student earnings. For the most economically disadvantaged families, parents are not expected to contribute to the cost of college; for others, parents' contributions may range from $500 to $3,000.
Average grant (based on Class of ’11): $43,900
Moderate-income families (yearly income between $53,500 and $75,000)
These families are expected to contribute more to the cost of college than lower-income families, but 100 percent of moderate-income families typically qualify for aid and students receive substantial grants.
Average grant (based on Class of ’11): $38,300
Middle-income families (yearly income between $75,000 and $150,000)
A pressing concern nationally is how middle-income families can continue to afford rising college costs. Princeton's aid program is doing an excellent job of addressing this concern, with more than 90 percent of students from this income bracket typically qualifying for aid.
Average grant (based on Class of ’11): $27,300
Higher-income families (yearly income above $150,000)
In a need-based aid system, higher-income families are asked to contribute more, and therefore they qualify for less aid. Some families who apply for aid are judged to have adequate resources to cover college costs and are not offered an aid package. However, in the Class of ’11 more than 80 percent of aid applicants from families with incomes between $150,000 and $200,000 received awards with grants averaging $17,100. Even among families with incomes above $200,000, one third of those who applied for aid received packages averaging $12,800. In most cases, these families have more than one child in college or other special circumstances that affect their eligibility for aid.
Use the Princeton Financial Aid Estimator for an indication of how much aid you may be eligible to receive.

Harvard College
Financial aid is more widely available than most families expect. We determine need based on a variety of family circumstances, not income alone. Even families with annual incomes exceeding $130,000 (U.S.) may qualify for scholarship aid.
